A few hours ago, I was reading about the Dhamma and felt convinced that I understood the path. On the cushion, however, that intellectual certainty has disappeared. My physical discomfort has erased my theories. My aching joints drown out the scriptures. I crave proof that this discomfort is "progress," but I am left with only the ache.
The Heavy Refusal to Comfort
I catch my shoulders tensing toward my ears; I release them, only for the tension to return moments later. The breath stutters. I feel irritation rising for no clear reason. I recognize it. Then I recognize recognizing it. I grow weary of this constant internal audit. In these moments, the Chanmyay instructions feel like a burden. They offer no consolation. They don’t say it’s okay. They just point back to what’s happening, again and again.
A mosquito is buzzing nearby; I endure the sound for as long as I can before finally striking out. The emotions—anger, release, guilt—pass through me in a blur. I am too slow to catch them all. That realization lands quietly, without drama.
Experience Isn't Neat
Satipatthana sounds clean when explained. Four foundations. Clear categories. But experience isn’t neat. It overlaps. Physical pain is interwoven with frustration, and my thoughts are physically manifest as muscle tightness. I sit here trying not to organize it, trying not to narrate, and still narrating anyway. My mind is stubborn like that.
I break my own rule and check the time: it's 2:12 a.m. The seconds continue regardless of my scrutiny. The pain in my leg moves more info just a fraction. I am annoyed that the pain won't stay still. I wanted it to be a reliable target for my mindfulness. The reality of the sensation doesn't read the books; it just keeps shifting.
The "explanations" finally stop when the physical sensations become too loud to ignore. Warmth, compression, and prickling sensations fill my awareness. I anchor myself in the most prominent feeling. My mind drifts and returns in a clumsy rhythm. There is no breakthrough tonight.
I don't have a better "theory" of meditation than when I started. I just feel here, caught between instruction and experience, between remembering and actually feeling, I am sitting in the middle of this imperfect, unfinished experience, letting it be exactly as it is, because reality doesn't need my approval to be real.
